Asbestos Removal in Aldershot

Aldershot sits about thirteen miles west of Guildford, over the Hog's Back on the A31 and then down the A331 Blackwater Valley road. It is in Hampshire rather than Surrey, in the borough of Rushmoor, and that county line matters more than the distance does.

The disposal problem, which is genuinely worse here

Every town page on this site has a section about the local recycling centre. This is the one where the answer is a problem rather than a caveat.

Aldershot Household Waste Recycling Centre does not accept asbestos. Neither does Farnborough. In the whole of Hampshire only five sites take it: Andover, Basingstoke, Efford, Netley and Portsmouth. Each requires pre-booking by telephone, each accepts only cement-bonded asbestos, and none of them is anywhere near Rushmoor.

The obvious workaround does not work either. Guildford Community Recycling Centre is thirteen miles away and does accept asbestos, but Surrey requires evidence of Surrey residency to use it. An Aldershot address will not do.

So for most households here the position is that there is no realistic way to take asbestos to a tip yourself. That is not us talking our own book. It is what the two county councils have decided between them, and it is why our collection service sees more use from Aldershot than from anywhere else we cover.

If you do intend to make the trip to one of the five Hampshire sites: phone first to book, wrap whole sheets securely in plastic and move them whole rather than breaking them, double bag anything small or broken, and expect a per-sheet charge above the household DIY allowance. The military town, and what it left behind

Aldershot is the Home of the British Army and has been since the 1850s, which shapes the building stock in a way no other town on our list is shaped.

The relevant fact for asbestos is a specific one. The garrison area was substantially rebuilt between 1961 and 1969, using what were then new building technologies. That rebuild sits precisely in the period when asbestos cement, insulating board and textured coatings were standard specification, and it was carried out at scale by a single client to a consistent set of details.

The practical consequence is that former military property tends to be consistent. If one married quarter of a given type has a particular material in a particular place, its neighbours very likely do too. That makes identification more reliable than usual and it makes a single test result more informative than usual.

Buildings still in Ministry of Defence use have their own asbestos management arrangements and are not ours to advise on. Where we do get called is former military housing that has passed into private or housing association hands, and the commercial and light industrial property around the edges of the garrison.

The town's older landmarks sit outside all of this. The Wellington Statue on Round Hill, cast from cannon captured at Waterloo, the Royal Garrison Church, the Wesleyan Church with its hundred foot tower and the circular red-brick Aldershot Observatory all predate the material by a long way.

Councils

Rushmoor Borough Council, within Hampshire County Council. Rushmoor is not part of the Surrey local government reorganisation, so unlike Farnham and Guildford just over the county line, nothing changes here in April 2027.

That distinction is worth knowing if your property or your business spans the boundary, because the answer to "which council" will be different on either side of the A325 from 2027 onwards.

What we get called out for

Garage roofs, on the private housing across the town and on the former service family accommodation.

Textured ceilings in the 1960s and 1970s housing, where the same contractor frequently did whole streets and the pattern is consistent enough to be a useful clue.

Insulating board in the flats and in former institutional buildings, which is licensed work and goes to an HSE-licensed contractor with the fourteen days notice that requires.

And collection, more than anywhere else, for the reasons set out above.

What the county line actually costs you

Worth being concrete, because it is the single most useful thing on this page.

Somebody in Godalming with six sheets off a shed roof can wrap them, phone Guildford, and drive four miles. Somebody in Aldershot with the identical six sheets has no site within reasonable reach that will take them, and the nearest one that will is in Andover, Basingstoke or further.

That is not a small difference. It means the do-it-yourself route, which is legal and sometimes sensible elsewhere, is effectively closed here for anything but the smallest quantity. It also means a certain amount of asbestos in Rushmoor ends up in general skips and behind sheds, which is both an offence and the reason a lot of our collection work here involves material that has been sitting somewhere for two or three years.

If you have material already stacked in a garden, it is worth dealing with rather than leaving. Weathered wrapping splits, sheets shed fragments into the ground beneath them, and what was six sheets becomes six sheets plus a contaminated patch of soil to clear.

Getting to you

The A31 over the Hog's Back then the A331, which is a good road and makes this a straightforward run despite the mileage. For the southern side of the town the A323 through Ash and Ash Vale is often better.
